A mammogram is a non-invasive high resolution, low-energy, digital x-ray picture that plays an essential role in the early detection and screening of breast cancer. Also called mastography, the goal of a mammography is to detect the characteristics of masses or microcalcifications.
Request an AppointmentRegular screening mammography can help detect cancer before clinical signs are noticeable.
We are aware of the urgency to be seen for a mammogram when you are experiencing symptoms such as a lump, pain, discharge, etc. This is why we have made it possible to be able to accommodate diagnostic mammograms within 10 business days.
Additional investigation using diagnostic mammography is used to assess suspicious breast changes, such as a new breast lump, breast pain, an unusual skin appearance, nipple thickening or nipple discharge. It may also follow a screening mammogram if it had suspicious findings.
How to prepare for the examination
learn moreIf you're experiencing breast tenderness as a result of menstruation, you might considerrescheduling. Additionally, it's crucial to inform both your physician and technologist if you have breast implants.
For this appointment, you will need to remove any deodorant, powder, perfumes and creams. Please be aware that some patients may be asked to return for extra views. This does not necessarily mean that there is a cause for concern.
The procedure involves positioning the patient upright, with one breast at a time carefully situated between two x-ray plates. These plates are then adjusted gradually to compress the breast tissue, ensuring optimal image quality. Two images are captured for each breast: one from top to bottom and another from side to side.
Following the completion of the test, you may experience temporary tenderness in your breasts. Rest assured, you will soon be able to resume your usual activities.
The images will be interpreted by a radiologist who will share the results with your referring doctor. It is suggested to schedule a follow-up appointment with your doctor to ensure that a clear explanation of the results is provided.
